30 September, 2013

Juan Calderón Bustillo, a PhD student from our group, has been awarded the 'LIGO student poster prize'. This is the prize for the best presented poster by a student at the LIGO-Virgo meeting, which took place in Hannover (Germany) from September 23rd to 27th, 2013. In this edition, more than 50 posters have been presented. Juan has won the prize in the category "theory/data analysis" with his poster Searching for Binary Black Holes using Full Waveforms. The judges have evaluated the quality and significance of the research, and the clarity and attractiveness of the poster itself.

Currently, Juan is a graduate student at UIB with Sascha Husa and Alicia Sintes as his advisors. He has been awarded a FPI grant by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, one of the most prestigious at the graduate level.

Other highlights of Juan's academic career are having graduated from the Cambridge Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics, achieving honors with Merit; and being the leader of the Science Section of the Spacial Project THESEUS (T-Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars with Echelle UV spectrograph), winner of the Alpbach Summer School 2011, organized by the ESA (European Space Agency). He has also done several research stays: in Caltech, in Cardiff University and also in the prestigious German Research Institute (GSI).

Congratulations, Juan!
